Course overview

Curated to equip you with the essential knowledge, understanding and skills for applying value-based healthcare in your work within the Australian healthcare system. In collaboration with NSW Ministry of Health, the Australian Federal Department of Health & Ageing, PHNs, and other key stakeholders, this course offers evidence-based research and tools for real-world application to shift from volume to value based care.

Throughout the progression of this course, you will reflect on what “value” means in the context of modern Australian healthcare and how to drive value in your health setting. By the end of this course you will have the essential capabilities to apply the concepts, principles, and tools underpinning value-based healthcare for delivering what consumers value in your everyday work.

1:1 coaching is included in this short course for application of learning back in the workplace, now and in the future.

A/Prof Huong Le-Dao | UNSW Medicine & Health

Associate Professor Huong Le-Dao contributes to teaching, education and research in value-based healthcare, health management and leadership within UNSW Medicine & Health. She specialises in strategy, policy and change with a strong focus on project and change management, organisational effectiveness, and leadership development.

As Director Short Courses within UNSW Medicine & Health, Huong leads our short courses, micro-nano credentials, and bespoke programs for health organisations to equip health professionals (clinicians and non-clinicians) with the needed capabilities and skills to boost their impact in health. Huong's work in credential education and training is shaping the health care system for the 21st century. She is passionate about better human experience and value in healthcare.

What are the course learning outcomes?

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the concept of value-based health care and its guiding principles for benefiting the patient, the healthcare worker, and the Australian health system
  • Identify key factors for applying value-based healthcare within your health setting and your scope of profession
  • Develop a care value chain to measure outcomes and costs (using Time Driven Activity Based Costing method) for patients with a health condition across a full cycle of care
  • Describe the funding arrangements and their impact on value-based healthcare
  • Apply PROMS and PREMS data for clinical consultation and in multidisciplinary team discussions for shared decision making and patient-centred care
  • Create a roadmap for transitioning towards value-based healthcare in your everyday work
  • Develop a schedule to plan and resource your work in a project for moving towards value-based healthcare
  • Identify change management principles for bringing people forward with value-based healthcare

What are the course credentials?

   

This course is worth 3 UNSW Medicine & Health Executive Certificate in Health (FMECH) points, which provides formal recognition of professional development and reflects 30 hours of learning inclusive of pre-work, course participation, learning materials and support.

Upon successful course completion, you will be issued with a UNSW Medicine & Health verifiable credential. The credential is valid for 3 years and can be counted towards your continuing professional development (CPD). Please check with your college as the credential provides documentary evidence which substantiate activities claimed under your college program.

Can I use my credit towards further study?

You can partake in another short course with FMECH points to achieve a total 150 hours of learning. Once you have achieved a total of 15 points, reflecting 150 hours of learning, you can use the 15 points to apply for recognition of prior learning for 6 units of credit (UOC) towards a postgraduate program within UNSW Medicine & Health. It is essential to complete and submit the course assessment on or before the final day of the course if you wish to apply to use the points towards CPD and/or credit for a UNSW postgraduate program in the future.
