This practical short course has been approved by Optometry Australia (OA) for the Institute of Excellence Quality Assurance (CPD).

The short course aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills to diagnose and manage progressive myopia. The course offers in depth understanding and knowledge of the latest evidence-based optical, pharmacological and behavioural interventions to appropriately manage progressive myopia.

You will be equipped with practical skills to be able to identify individuals at risk of myopia development and progression and develop personalised management plans for simple and complex myopia cases.

Through the progression of this course, you will also learn how to critically appraise the literature regarding new therapies, so that you can develop life-long skills to be able to independently evaluate literature on new therapies as they are introduced.

 

What are the course learning outcomes?

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify key risk factors for myopia development or progression.
  • Describe benefits and limitations of current optical, pharmacological and behavioural interventions for progressive myopia.
  • Apply specialised ophthalmic technologies and methodologies necessary for appropriate management of progressive myopia.
  • Demonstrate knowledge to be able to competently design, develop and revise a management plan for progressive myopia involving optical, pharmacological or behavioural interventions.
  • Communicate in an ethical and knowledgeable manner with patients and their parents and/or guardians of the management of their progressive myopia.

For lifelong learning, the following topics are offered in the course for developing and increasing your knowledge, understanding and skills in traditional and agile project management within healthcare.

  • Introduction to myopia
  • Refractive error development
  • Epidemiology of myopia
  • Risk factors for myopia
  • Monitoring myopia progression
  • Spectacles for myopia control
  • Soft contact lenses for myopia control
  • Orthokeratology for myopia control
  • Atropine and other pharmacological interventions for myopia control
  • Behavioural modifications for myopia management
  • Clinical considerations for myopia management (UNSW and AOC)

This short course is for eye health care clinicians with an interest in diagnosing and managing progressive myopia in Australia and overseas.

What are the course credentials?

This course is worth 3 UNSW Medicine & Health Executive Certificate in Health (FMECH) points, which provides formal recognition of professional development and reflects 30 hours of learning inclusive of pre-work, course participation, learning materials and support. Upon course completion, you will be issued with a UNSW Medicine & Health verifiable credential.

The credential is valid for 3 years and can be counted towards your continuing professional development (CPD). Please check with Optometry Australia (OA) as the credential provides documentary evidence which can be claimed under your CPD program.

Can I use my credit towards further study?

You can partake another short course with FMECH points to achieve a total 150 hours of study. Once you have achieved a total of 15 points, reflecting 150 hours of study, you can use the 15 points to apply for recognition of prior learning for 6 units of credit (6 UOC) towards a postgraduate program within UNSW Medicine & Health. It is essential to complete the assessment if you wish to apply to use the points towards credit for a UNSW postgraduate program in the future.

Dr Nayuta Yoshioka, PhD
Education Focused Lecturer, School of Optometry and Vision Science, UNSW Medicine & Health 


Dr Nayuta Yoshioka (or Yoshi) is an Education Focused lecturer at UNSW. His main teaching focus is in the field of myopia management, ophthalmic dispensing and vision science. His current research interest is image analysis technology and the novel application of technology to optometric teaching. Dr Yoshi is dedicated to improving the educational experience of students, completing the Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching (UNSW, 2021) and has received the “Dean’s Award for Education Excellence” from the Faculty of Science, UNSW (2020).
